Biography

Having been a part of the Minor Firm family since he was three years old, John knows what it means to help clients find solutions. For nearly two decades, John has developed significant experience in complex estate planning and asset protection techniques, sophisticated tax planning, business law, elder care planning, health care law, regulatory issues, probate and estate administration, and guardianship law.

In helping individuals protect their assets, John focuses on trust strategies ranging from plans designed to protect the assets of high-net-worth individuals to strategies designed to protect the assets of families with seniors looking at potential long-term care options. John also has expertise in estate planning, wealth transfer planning, and complex tax planning. He brings unique perspectives to planning opportunities for blended families as well as for families with special needs. John stresses the importance of focusing not only on planning for death, but also on planning for issues that may arise during life, such as incapacity. Powers of attorney, health care directives, HIPAA authorizations, living wills, living trusts, and similar documents are necessities for everyone.

John also advises businesses and health care providers with business transactions, contracts, general practice matters, asset protection, employment matters, and similar matters. John has expertise in the complex regulatory issues surrounding the health care industry, such as the Stark and Anti-Kickback laws, HIPAA, Medicare and Medicaid, the False Claims Act, and many other areas.

In addition to assisting people plan during life, John assists people navigate the probate process, including tax strategies, postmortem planning opportunities, and estate disputes. John also handles guardianship matters, conservatorships, and other legal proceedings, bringing years of experience in the probate courts to his clients.

John values personal attention and communication as the foundation of effective problem-solving; he makes it his goal to truly know and care about his clients and the issues they face. From the simplest estate plan to the most complex, John focuses on detail.

He also values community involvement – he is active with nonprofit organizations in our communities, and he regularly speaks to the community on various legal matters. An Eagle Scout, John is twice a past president of the Cherokee Area Estate Planning Counsel. He has served for several years on the Executive Board of Directors of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chair from 2024-2025. John serves on the Ethics Committee of Hamilton Medical Center and is a graduate of both the Leadership Catoosa and the Leadership Dalton-Whitfield programs. A past board member of Looper Speech and Hearing Center, John now serves on multiple nonprofit boards, including the Creative Arts Guild of Dalton, the Miracle League of Chattanooga (Founding Board Member), the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Georgia, and previously on the United Way of Northwest Georgia’s campaign cabinet. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Dalton and the Dalton Civitan Club.

John graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University in 2003, with majors in Music Composition and Theory and Cognitive Psychology. He received his Juris Doctorate from Mercer University, Walter F. George School of Law in 2006, and has been practicing with the Minor Firm ever since. A registered mediator, John is also a member of the Conasauga Bar Association and is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. John is admitted to practice law as a member of the state bars in both Georgia and in Tennessee.
